10 Minutes With Angel Sanchez

Fashion Designer

Salma Hayek, Sandra Bullock and Beyoncé are all devotees of Angel Sanchez’s razor-sharp architectural designs.

His highly coveted wedding dresses gently flatter a bride's form with surprisingly sophisticated silhouettes and details that put the "D" in Divine.

We recently sat down with Angel to chat about his work, inspiration and what he loves most about brides.

Who, what and where inspire you?
I am inspired by a number of things: sometimes working directly with a client and listening to her needs; being alone at my atelier after hours; experimenting with fabric on a mannequin; art and photography books.

Or, in unexpected ways, such as: walking along the street, doodling while on the phone, or enjoying a glass of wine. It comes so suddenly. That's why I always keep a pencil and notepad with me.

How did you end up in your profession?
With training and inspiration. As a child, I would sit at my mother's atelier and watch her create beautiful gowns for her clients; that inspiration, along with endless hours of instruction, led me to where I am now.

What is the best part of your job?
After 20 years, I still love how dynamic and creative it is to design a new collection. I never get bored! Each collection each season tells a story.

What is your favorite look right now?
Asymmetric cuts and the new techniques of ornamentation. My pieces are always architectural; these new developments help me find new ways to fuse my style with the perfect touch of romanticism a bride wants.

What do you love about brides?
I enjoy forming part of such a special moment in the life of a woman and being able to reinterpret the symbolism and romanticism that is a bridal gown. I like the process of generating an idea in white. It's always fresh, ethereal. It allows me to express myself in a relaxed manner.

What is the one thing every bride needs?
A groom that's head over heels!

What's a Bridal Do?
Do add a personal touch that makes the wedding your own and allows you to stand out.

...and a Bridal Don't?
Don't take off your shoes. At any point!

What's next?
[My new line] Sanchez. I am putting a lot of energy into my new collection of dresses that will be presented this upcoming September. Sanchez has allowed me to express other facets of my identity as a designer. This new line is younger, more relaxed.

Finally, tell us a style secret that can make any wedding look magical. (We promise we won't tell.)
Make it timeless… Keep the palette simple and make sure you use soft lighting.

Thank you Angel.
