10 Minutes With: Badgley Mischka

Designers

With Badgley Mischka’s signature head-to-toe beading, feathers and body-con silhouettes galore, brides can indulge their most fabulous fashion fantasies while remaining timeless, beautiful and totally chic.

Mark Badgley likes to say, “One zip and you’re glamorous.” Well, that’s a philosophy we can live by, and so can the scores of their famous fans like J.Lo, Madge and SJP. 1998 marked the duo’s bridal beginnings, giving brides-to-be (famous or just fabulous) a shiny new outlook on the wedding dress, sans fuss.

We had the pleasure of visiting with Mark Badgley and James Mischka to find out what makes these two tick and what makes a Badgley Mischka Bride.

How did you end up in your profession?
I (Mark Badgley) knew from childhood that I wanted to be a designer. James was going to go into biomedical engineering. We both eventually went to Parsons in New York and got degrees in Fashion Design and started working for other designers (Donna Karan and Willi Smith) and knew we were where we needed to be.

What is the best part of your job?
The best (and worst) part of fashion is that you are always changing. Every season is a fresh, but blank, canvas. You can never rest on what you’ve done, or you are ‘so last season.’

What is your favorite trend right now?
We are so glad to see that glamour is trending back again. For us, it never goes away.

Who, what and where inspires you?
Everything we do inspires us in some way--an exotic trip, a favorite (or new) movie, our friends, a great restaurant, colors at the Greenmarket; we are open to everything and then we filter it.

What do you love about brides?
In addition to the fact that they are, by definition, beautiful? We love that a bride really gets to focus on herself that day. It is her chance to create her own world for a day.

What is the one thing every bride needs?
A great Maid (or Matron) of Honor--there is so much to do!

Can you give us a BRIDAL DO?
It’s the most important thing you can do to look great: pay attention to the fit of your gown. A great dress that is ill fitting won’t make you look fabulous, but any gown that fits flawlessly will make you look your best.

What about a BRIDAL DON’T?
Don’t stress on the actual wedding day. The most important thing is to enjoy your day and the start of your new life!

What’s next?
The next big frontier for Badgley Mischka is expanding our retail. We have great boutiques in Beverly Hills and Palm Beach (both with bridal salons), and are expanding next into New York and in a big way in China (10 stores so far).

Finally, tell us a style secret that can make a wedding look magic. (We promise we won’t tell.)
Candles, candles and more candles!

Thank you Mark & James!
