Feeling slightly off-balance? Is something askew? Not to worry, so are many wedding dresses at the moment. Taking direction from the RTW collections, asymmetric details are running rampant. The most obvious example is the one-shoulder gown. Several seasons back, the Grecian look prevailed among the wedding collections. There were soft, floating, toga-like gowns everywhere. Flattering and fantastic for destination weddings, the one-shoulder took hold.
Designers have been playing these one-sided jests on us for a while with cleverly draped and layered skirts, beading that clusters to the left or to the right and bodices that dip in an uneven fashion. This season saw several gowns with single, long sleeves that felt very 1980’s, but in a good way.
All the asymmetric trickery going on can be really subtle or it can be a bold, sweeping statement of your singular style.
