The term "column" brings to mind a clear mental picture…statuesque, sleek and Greek in origin. A column gown is all these things and more. It is long, linear and streamlined. It can lightly graze or hug the body in a snug embrace.
A column can be worn by women of any height, but is not suited for every shape. Columns are best on narrow women with straight up and down bodies and modest curves.
Columns in clean, uncluttered fabrics like silk crepe, radzmir and regal duchess satins look elegant and modern. Softer, drapier fabrics like lace, silk chiffons and silk charmeuse can have a more retro, 1920's appeal. Some columns can be cut on the bias (on an angle), which allows the fabric a natural stretch and gives a clingier, sexier look.
The column is a fabulous choice for a bride who wants to keep her look chic, unfussy and very sophisticated.
