The Spring 2012 Christos show felt like a formal affair. Chic, stately ball gowns and crisp A-line dresses were pretty and proper. While the Christos collection is usually a play of soft tulles, laces and light organzas that look like they belong in a sophisticated country wedding, this collection moved into new, serious territory.

Elegant, luminous satins brushed up against a unique scroll-embroidered silk organza that added a patterned, couture-like statement to the line up. Fitted strapless sweetheart bodices, with draping that worked a wrap-like effect, almost felt like they were pinched from a 1950's Doris Day romp where the ladies were always dressed to thrill.

Today's bride, however, is not nearly as "done;" she has soft, free-flowing hair and wears peachy natural-toned makeup like the Christos bride. One of my favorites, the duchess satin A-line Selma gown, with a wrapped bodice and poufy bustled skirt, could easily be worn with fitted elbow length gloves and a sparkly tiara, but was instead left free of artifice and extraneous drama, showing the true beauty of a glowing bride in her dress. Sometimes less really is more, and this collection gave us some stunning examples of that philosophy.
