Amsale’s Fall 2012 collection is for the bride who’s not looking for lots of bells and whistles on her wedding dress, but instead wants a clean, chic gown that is the epitome of ultra-modern design.
The show began with simple, almost stark ball gowns cut in sophisticated silk wool and tulle like the Aspen gown, which set the mood for her no-nonsense directive. Other beautiful, sculptural gowns were to follow, with bateau necklines, one-shoulder bodices and a gleaming silk wool mini dress. Any designer worth her salt will tell you that designing and crafting a ‘simple’ gown without a lot of fuss is the hardest thing to achieve. Every seam, every curve, every detail must be exact. Amsale has this down to a science; no one does it better.
In keeping with her no fuss, no muss attitude of this collection, Amsale did lighten up a bit, quite literally, with an amazing group of tissue-weight taffeta ball gowns that seemed to float above the ground. Asymmetric bows, draping and underskirts of airy tulle gave a hint of softness to her clutter-free aesthetic.
Amsale did give us one witty moment of frill, albeit the most modern frill ever, but a frill nonetheless. Her Nola dress captured our hearts immediately, a Little White Dresses with a strict, high bateau sleeveless bodice in silk wool and a subtle bell shaped skirt covered in organza curly-cues and feathers. Love.
We wouldn’t describe Amsale as a minimalist exactly--that sounds a bit cold. She is a modernist who knows when to add romance and where to add sweetness. She understands how to dress a bride and let her shine through on her most important day.
We are always treated to some of the prettiest, most covetable bridesmaid dresses at an Amsale show and this season was no exception. The soft, flattering palette of Coral, Dove Grey, Soft Rose and a bold Dusty Purple were so pretty and sophisticated, they felt more RTW than BM.
We loved the beautiful coral gown cut in crinkle silk chiffon with an ingeniously draped bodice and soft, flowing Grecian-style skirt. Amsale’s purple gowns, all in a light, very drapey matte jersey, simultaneously hugged and glided over the body in chic, twisted halter necklines, sculptural one-shoulders and sexy cowl backs. These are bridesmaids at their best.
