If you want to know if designer Michael Shettel believes in good old-fashioned romance, all you have to do is take one look at his Fall 2012 collection for Alfred Angelo. This season, his dresses are steeped in romance with ruffles, lace, flowers and frills. He’s speaking to brides of all ages and sizes because, let’s face it, romance knows no boundaries. Models from size 2-20 stalked his runway proving gorgeous comes in any size and shape.

This season’s dresses played up the frill-factor with organza wave-cut skirts, soft, layered, sheer ruffles and asymmetric tiers so light and airy they look like clouds. Classically beaded bodices offered a sparkling contrast to all the draped, floaty skirts, giving a subtle vintage look to the gowns. A lovely jeweled trompe l’oeil collar that looks like a Victorian paste necklace sits at the neck of an embroidered halter mermaid, one of our favorites, while lush flower appliques adorn waists and bodices giving a new three-dimensionality to the collection.

The Alfred Angelo Bridesmaids were out in full force, too, with hot hits of color like cherry, violet and tangerine, and soft shades of key-lime, turquoise and coral. Want something more toned down? Try his calming shades of dove grey or charcoal; they’re smart and elegant. A fun pair of sparkling black sequin minis could make the ideal bachelorette party dresses for the bride!

Speaking of black, that leads us to his spectacular finale. A quad of white dresses get punched up with dramatic jet in the form of a simple sash sitting on top of a tulle peplum, an all-over embroidered floral and vine pattern that is marvelously striking on a tulle mermaid, delicate lace cut outs that work their way around a pretty natural-waisted ball gown and a Victorian-feel jet beaded and embroidered sheer jacket that sits over a classic white satin gown. This is romance, old and new, at its best.
