Writing Your Wedding Vows
Writing your own vows is not only incredibly romantic, but it allows you to express the love you have for your significant other in a personal way. While the process seems simple in theory, there are a few things you need to know before putting pen to paper. Here are some tips for writing beautiful wedding vows for your bride or groom- to-be.
Get On The Same Page
First and foremost, agree that you both want to write your own vows. While you may love writing and speaking in public, your partner may prefer to recite traditional vows. If you both agree, be sure to decide on an approximate length to prevent any surprise monologues. For traditional wedding ceremonies, consult with your officiant to ensure you are able to recite vows.
Write Them In Advance
While it’s possible to compose your vows last-minute, the best writing comes with contemplation and time. Take a few days and think about what you want to say and how you want to say it. Then, sit down and let the words flow.
Make Them Personal
Some suggest the bride and groom write their vows in similar voices, but this takes away from their individuality. Instead, make them personal by expressing your truest feelings or recalling a special moment you shared. Your vows will remain genuine and natural, and allow your personality to shine through. After all, it’s why you fell in love with each other!
Make Them Pretty
Rather than holding a single sheet of lined paper, consider having your vows printed on stationery that compliments your decor. Check out our stationery gallery for some beautiful inspiration.
Remember that you will be reciting these in front of your guests. Although they are your nearest and dearest, sharing your thoughts and words with others is always nerve wracking. Practice your vows at least five times before the ceremony. When it comes time to recite them to your bride or groom, take a breath and focus on the words, your feelings and the true love you have for this very special person.
