Bride of the Week: Nelissa Lizares

After spending three years in a long-distance relationship, with Nelissa in New York and John in San Diego, the couple wanted nothing more than to bring everyone together to celebrate their marriage.

On the 15th of December, 2012, Nelissa and John and their families met in La Jolla, California, for a destination wedding full of elegant touches and a little holiday sparkle.

The couple chose Mary, Star of the Sea Church for their Catholic nuptial mass. They included family traditions, including the laying of the veil and cord and the blessing of the arrhae, or wedding tokens. Nelissa wore a polished strapless Amsale gown with a unique neckline and subtle embellishment, which she paired with sparkling Jimmy Choo pumps and her grandmother’s jewelry. John wore a modern tuxedo by Hugo Boss, which he accessorized with a gray striped tie.

After the ceremony, guests gathered on the verandah of the La Valencia Hotel, with a gorgeous view of the California coast and the Pacific Ocean, for cocktails and a luncheon reception. Nelissa and John served two signature cocktails: The Blushing Bride (gin infused with peach and raspberry, topped with ginger beer) and The Marry Me Mojito (rum, mint, lime and cane sugar topped with club soda).

The décor was fresh and modern, with a nod to the holiday season. A palette of silver, pewter and ivory created a refined and elegant setting for their celebration, while off-white roses, hydrangeas and lilies – mixed with soft gray lamb’s ear – softened the look. John and Nelissa’s monogram tied the details together, making an appearance on their printed materials, cocktail napkins, favors and thank you cards.

After lunch, the couple served a modern wedding cake with a floral accent and delicious tiramisu filling. As an homage to New York, guests received miniature black and white cookies as the wedding favor.

The highlight of the day was the time Nelissa and John were able to spend with their friends and family. From Nelissa’s father’s heartwarming speech welcoming his new son-in-law to the family to the quiet time she spent getting ready with her mom, all of the challenges of planning a destination wedding were worth it as their nearest and dearest came together from around the world to celebrate their union.
