Create A DIY Photo Booth With Things You Already Own
Photo booths are such a fun way to give your guests an extra special treat during an event. Whether you’re planning a wedding, birthday, or just entertaining at home, you can set up a DIY photo booth in very little time with things you already own!
- A camera
- A backdrop
- Good lighting
- A portable printer & photo paper (optional)
1. Say Cheese!
First, you need a way to take photos! You can use a digital camera like a point-and-shoot, a DLSR, a disposable camera, your phone’s camera, or a tablet’s camera. Unless you want to have people as designated photographers throughout the night, you’ll also need a tripod. Inexpensive ones for cameras and phones and be purchased online.
2. A Beautiful Backdrop
Next you’ll need to create the photo booth station. A backdrop can be as simple as a curtain hung on a wall! Other options are rows of streamers, sheets of wrapping paper, or a garland of twinkle lights. You will need the space to fit 2-4 people side by side (think about the size of a door).
3. All Of The Lights
Lighting is critical when it comes to taking photos. Be sure to provide your guests with as much lighting as possible. If your event is outside during the, it is much easier to take photos with natural light. However for events in doors, be sure to either play guests in the most brightly lit area, by a window during the day, or surrounded by lights in the evening. Inexpensive light kits can be purchased online, but you can also simply move lamps to the sides of the booth for adequate lighting.
4. Give Them Props
Half the fun of photo booths is the goofy props! You can leave out a selection of costume pieces like hats, feather boas and sunglasses. You can also DIY props themselves – all you need is colorful construction paper, a glue stick, and popsicle sticks or skewers. Cut out paper bow ties, glasses, picture frames and masks for people to hold in front of their faces. Get creative and think outside the box!
5. A Picture Says 1,000 Words
Finally, you have your photos! Now what? You can set up a shared online album, so people can share across social media, or put out a small portable printer with photo paper, so people can take home copies of their photo booth photos the same day! Either way, you can’t lose.
