Color Me Black & White

At your wedding, all eyes will be on you in your white dress and your groom in his black suit, so why not take the color scheme a step further? Deck out your reception in a classy, elegant combination of black and white. The colors may be simple, but there'll be no shortage of  exciting details.

SET THE SCENE

Make a bold statement from the first moment by covering one of the walls in the reception area with a graphic black and white stripe. Echo the pattern with matching chair covers for a cohesive look. Keep the room light and fresh with all-white tables and towering arrangements of white orchids in clear glass vases.

For a touch of drama on a darker table (and an easy DIY project!) use black electrical tape to create stripes around clear square vases. Tightly pack white roses for a clean centerpiece. Scatter black votive candles in low containers amongst the flowers for a soft, warm glow.

Keep a lounge or cocktail area crisp and clean with square white tables and low black couches. Mix in different accents, such as faux fur pillows and white-piped ottomans, for added texture. Add a pop of color with centerpieces made of wheatgrass.

Silver and gray blend seamlessly into a black and white color scheme. A matte silver tablecloth adds a touch of shine, while black glassware pops against the lighter colors. Tie crisp white napkins with two ribbons – one in black satin, another in white with black polka dots. Keep the dishes and wine glasses simple to allow the black details to stand out.

SOMETHING SWEET

When it comes to your cake, a black and white color scheme is ideal for adding visual interest to a simple white shape. Consider having your baker hand-write a message around your cake, whether it is a love letter, lyrics or a sentimental prayer, Punctuate the writing with ornate flowers, ribbons and a touch of shine. Or, if simple is more your style, stud each layer of the cake with tiny white dots. Black and white sugar anemones add a subtle floral element.

Can’t pick a flavor? Why not treat your guests with a desert table featuring all of the cakes you loved. Mix it up with black-on-white and white-on-black designs including polka dots, paisley and your monogram. Add some sugar flowers and dishes of equally graphic sweets for a touch of whimsy.

Your cake is also a great opportunity to add color to your black and white theme. A white cake with black banding, silver details and deep purple sugar roses is clean and sleek but still fun. You could also go bold and graphic with a square cake featuring spaced-out tiers and an oversize monogram in a modern font. Orange sugar calla lilies brighten up and soften the architectural dessert display.
