10 Minutes With: Tequila Avión

Agave You

We asked Tequila Avión to tell us more about this spirited drink and how it can be incorporated into your wedding. Here’s what they had to say.

Neither cactus nor aloe, the agave plant was brought to Europe by Spanish and Portuguese explorers in the 1800s in the hopes it could be cultivated. But in the end, the stubborn tequila agave needed the high altitude and rich soils of Jalisco, Mexico to thrive and produce its delicious spirit, tequila.

7,000 feet high in those hills is where the special Blue Weber agave grows to be eventually bottled (after being filtered 10 times) into premium Tequila Avión. (If you watch HBO’s Entourage, it is the tequila that made the character Vince nearly lose a movie gig.) It’s also an award-winning brand that is taking cocktail culture by storm.

What makes tequila stand apart from other kinds of liquor?
Tequila is a unique spirit that can be savored on its own. Thanks to agave, it has its own distinct flavors and aromas, depending on when it was bottled and its distillation process. But it can also work in cocktails for guests who aren’t ready for drinking it straight.

You mention various flavors and aromas. Not all of your tequilas are alike?
There are three flavors of Tequila Avión: Añejo, Reposado, and Silver.

Tequila Avión Silver is not aged, but has an intense agave aroma of mint and rosemary and black pepper. It is crisp and clean and has a taste that hints of grapefruit and pineapple.

Then there’s Tequila Avión Reposado. This style is aged for six months to bring out its cherry, pear, and peachy taste. But it also has a tinge of an herby edge to make it a more sophisticated option.

At last, there’s Tequila Avión Añejo. It is aged for two years. This aging process draws out its rich harmony of coconut, vanilla, caramel, and maple. Depending on how you will be drinking it, there are a few different kinds of tastes to satisfy.

Speaking of guests who may not be ready to drink it straight, what do you recommend for those who aren’t ready for a sipping tequila?
A great beginner cocktail for a novice tequila drinker is our Elevated Margarita (see recipe below). This particular margarita is very refreshing and allows the smooth flavor of Tequila Avión Silver to shine through without being too overpowering.

Elevated Margarita

  • 2 parts Tequila Avión Silver
  • 1 part fresh lime juice
  • ½ part agave nectar

Add ingredients to shaker. Shake and strain over ice.

What are some new and elegant ways couples can serve tequila on their wedding day?
Some of the biggest trends we’re seeing are mixing it with Champagne or Prosecco, which is very wedding-friendly, to create a bubbly cocktail. A popular Champagne cocktail of ours is made up of Rosé Champagne and Tequila Avión Reposado served in a champagne flute.

Can you share another favorite tequila recipe that also has a surprising twist for wedding guests?
Offering tequila cocktails in unexpected glassware can make a guest feel special. Our Avión and Limoncello cocktail is served in a martini glass.

Avión & Limoncello

  • 1 ½ parts Tequila Avión Silver
  • 1 part Limoncello
  • 1 part fresh lemon juice
  • Prosecco
  • Sugar

Add a sugar rim to the martini glass. Combine Avión, Limoncello, and lime juice in a shaker and fine strain into glass. Top off with Prosecco. Garnish with sugar rim and lemon wheel.
