Lovely to A Tea
Real Bridal Shower: Katherine
When cupcakes aren’t just your passion but your profession, your bridal shower will be no cookie-cutter affair.
You’re getting married and your sister wants to host your bridal shower. Check. She plans on holding a tea party in a garden at a local historic estate. Check. But if your sisters are Katherine Kallinis and Sophie LaMontagne, bakers and founders of Georgetown Cupcake, stars of the hit TLC series DC Cupcakes and best-selling authors of two books on said confections, you can expect a bridal shower that’s probably a little more...lavish. Make that sweeter too.
On August 14, 2011, 100 female guests gathered in the sisters’ home city of Toronto for a noontime party that celebrated Katherine’s impending marriage to beau Ben Berman. Sophie, her matron of honor, planned the lovely over-the-top affair that had tea, presents and, of course, lots of cupcakes.
It took three months for Sophie to plan the pink-themed event. “Our favorite color is pink and I may have gone a bit overboard on the flowers,” she says. There were peony-pink-hued silk table linens, romantic fresh floral centerpieces and, naturally, a pink cupcake bar.
Whether you’ve stood in the line that snakes around the block to their M Street NW bakery in Washington, D.C., or watched their hit reality show about a day-in-the-life of the two most famous baking sister act, it should come as no surprise that there were plenty of their favorite baked goods on hand.
There were mini cupcakes in red velvet, lemon blossom, coconut, lava fudge, vanilla and peanut butter fudge. They were used as placeholders for guests’ seat cards and as table numbers. Tables were named after particular flavors too. Not hard considering their bakery sells 10,000 cupcakes daily and offers more than 18 flavors each day.
