Ask Colin: Etiquette
My husband and I were married in a courthouse a year ago due to financial reasons, and now we are thinking of having a wedding to celebrate with family and friends. What is the appropriate way to go about having a wedding if you are already married? Also, does the celebration have to be on the same day we got married on? Is it appropriate to have a gift registry?
Feel free to celebrate any day – it won’t change your anniversary, and your friends and family will be thrilled to be able to honor the commitment you’ve made to one another. Without the additional formalities of a ceremony, choose the type of celebration that is best for you, whether it’s a chic cocktail party, a casual dinner in the backyard or a full-out ballroom event. In the invitation, invite your friends to a celebration in honor of your marriage (vs. requesting their presence at your marriage). And because you didn’t have a wedding when you were married a year ago, treat this as though it’s merely a belated celebration, registry and all!
